We have been thinking a lot at NYEBN about how to build a larger platform that's more powerful and effective in connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and small business owners. As a result, we announced NY Business Expo two months ago. So far, I'm glad to say that we've made lots of progress. Over the weekend, we just did a home page makeover of the expo site to reflect the community support we have received and the amount of mentors and speakers that have signed up for the expo. Thanks to those who have agreed to participate and work with us to create the kind of Expo 2.0 experience for the two-day program in November.

 

As a reminder, the early bird price for exhibitors will end by the end of July. You can save $300 if you sign up in July. Just fill out this form. We're also hard at work in creating more expo-related events in the coming months. As a result, we would launch a series of pre-expo networking receptions in the upcoming months. And for each roundtable event going forward, we would extend the the time for attendees to connect and network at the end as part of the expo initiative. You all know what that means: more BEER for everyone!

 

We have a few new mentors who signed up for the Startup Central segment of the expo. Here we'd like to welcome them on board:

 

Paul Cianciolo (website) - Paul Cianciolo is a Senior Associate at FirstMark Capital, a New York City-based early stage venture capital firm, where he focuses on investments within the digital media, data & analytics, and vertical applications & services sectors. Paul currently leads the firm’s deal sourcing and investment evaluation team, in addition to serving as a Board Observer at several FirstMark portfolio companies, including Greenphire, Dashlane, Schoology, and StraighterLine. Paul also serves as a mentor for Blueprint Health, the NYC-based, TechStars-affiliated healthcare startup accelerator. Prior to joining FirstMark, Paul worked within the M&A group at New York City-based investment bank Allen & Company, where he assisted on transactions in the sports, media, and entertainment sectors. Paul holds an MBA and BS in Finance from the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University.


Vic Singh (website) - Vic Singh is a two-time entrepreneur and venture capitalist in the mobile software space. He is currently Founder and CEO of Tracks, a mobile software startup and Founding General Partner with Eniac Ventures, a mobile focused venture capital firm. Previously Vic co-founded NearVerse (mobile proximity Internet) and was an investor with RRE Ventures where he focused on consumer Internet and cleantech. Vic has advised and invested in 50+ early stage software startups. He holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BSE from the University of Pennsylvania.


Veronika Sonsev (website) - Veronika Sonsev is the CEO and Founder of inSparq.com, a social commerce technology company. She is also a Cofounder of Women in Wireless and the WIM Accelerator. In her 12-year career as an entrepreneur and executive at AOL and Jumptap, Veronika has built new business lines, developed strategic partnerships and launched international markets. Veronika earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Economics from American University. She was recently honored by Fast Company as one of 60 members to The League of Extraordinary Women. Veronika was also named one of the Mobile Women to Watch 2012 by Mobile Marketer and one of the Top 50 Women to Watch in Tech by Femmeonomics.


Bo Yaghmaie (website) - Bo leads the New York Business Technology Group at Cooley LLP. He represents private and publicly-held emerging growth high technology and life science companies, leading investment banks and venture capital funds, with a focus on private placements and venture financings, public offerings of equity securities, and mergers and acquisitions. He has been involved in many of the leading corporate and financing technology transactions in the New York area, and regularly represents numerous venture-backed companies and venture capital funds. He serves as a TechStars Mentor and as an ER Accelerator Mentor.


Bo is also a member of the Entrepreneurial Sounding Board at Columbia University's Eugene Lang Entrepreneurship Center. He played an integral role in the 2012 launch of the Digital Media Center in New York which serves to provide a networking platform for emerging companies and members of the digital media ecosystem. Bo was also recognized by AlwaysOn as a 2012 "New York City Power Player" for helping entrepreneurs who bring technology breakthroughs to the world of digital media.


Bo has also been named among the Top 100 IPO Lawyers in the United States. He has represented both issuers and underwriters in public offerings by venture-backed issuers across a variety of industries and has served as counsel to many leading investment banks including Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Friedman Billings Ramsey, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

 

By the beginning of November, our goal is to reach close to 100 startup mentors. Startup Central is a feature of the 2012 NY Business Expo. It's a nice gesture for us to integrate the startup ecosystem into a large-scale business trade show. This segment is free to attend. My friend did a video interview of me discussing the upcoming expo, especially the Startup Central component the other day. It's very nice of him to publish this on the Business2Community website. We did the taping on a Saturday morning at the NYEBN HQ in Chelsea.

 

Over the last two months, we've received a myriad of questions coming from potential expo attendees in the entrepreneur community. We thought it'd be great to have a dedicated faq page set up on the expo site. Now the faq section is live and you can check out some basic Q&As here. We will be adding more questions on an ongoing basis.
