David Rose (bio from Quora)
I am a serial entrepreneur and active angel investor, based in New York. As an inveterate startup guy, I’ve founded half a dozen companies since my first at age 10, and as ‘super angel’ technology investor, I have funded over 80 others. I am the founder and CEO of Gust, the entrepreneurial finance industry's infrastructure platform; founder and Chairman Emeritus of New York Angels, one of the leading angel groups on the East Coast; Managing Principal of Rose Tech Ventures, an early-stage ‘super angel’ fund specializing in Internet-based business; and Chairman of Egret Capital Partners, a middle market private equity firm.
In 2009, I joined artificial intelligence pioneer Ray Kurzweil and X Prize founder Peter Diamandis as an associate founder of Singularity University, where I chair the Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economics track, and this past year I hosted the online reality web series Second Chance on MSN, in which four entrepreneurial contestants competed in a series of educational business challenges to win $200,000 in prizes to fund their second chance at business.
I’ve been involved in the development of the Silicon Alley technology community in New York for many decades, including working with online data services in the 1970s (Sysop of several Compuserve forums, if anyone still remembers that term), founding an early personal computer training company in the 1980s (the Computer Classroom), a wireless data information network in the 1990s (AirMedia Live) and an international angel investing platform in the 2000s (Angelsoft, now Gust.com).
Among the fields in which I have been actively involved as an executive, board member or investor are: wireless communications, technology-enhanced real estate, consumer electronics, international finance, social networking, space tourism, user-generated content, robotic pets, online video, mobile network security, biological testing, electronic music, citizen journalism, out-of-home advertising, fiber-optic networking, concierge medicine, online marketing, interactive voice response, and many others.
Gust, my full-time day job, built and operates the global collaboration infrastructure for the early stage entrepreneurial economy (we run the official angel investing platform for the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Portugal, Turkey, India and several other countries, connecting 125,000 startup companies with 35,000 investors, and processing over 5,000 business plans a month.)
I serve on the boards of directors of KoolSpan, Pond5, Comixology, Social Bomb, Magnify Networks and Por ti Familia (Peru), in additional to those of several philanthropic and public service organizations.
I founded and ran a technology incubator in New York City, was 2009 Mentor of the Year at NYU Stern Business School, and was nicknamed 'The Pitch Coach' by BusinessWeek for my training of entrepreneurs seeking funding from venture capitalists and angel investors (you may have come across my TED video on the subject, which has had over 300,000 views).
Before entering the technology field, I had prior careers in real estate development with the firm of Rose Associates, and government as Special Assistant to US Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. My avocation is the archaic art and craft of letterpress printing, and I am the current President of The Typophiles, and Chairman of the National Art Club's Book Arts Committee, as well as a book collector with an extensive collection on the history of the book.
I’m a native New Yorker; a graduate of the New York City public schools and Horace Mann High School. I received my BA in Urban Affairs from Yale an MBA in Finance from Columbia Business School, and an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Stevens Institute of Technology. I am an Associate Fellow of Pierson College at Yale, and a member of the Entrepreneurship Advisory Boards of Columbia Business School and the Yale Entrepreneurship Institute.
